Bodega Luzdivina Amigo
Our viticultural heritage dates back to 1894 when our great-grandparents decided to plant vineyards, and our family has been growing grapes ever since.
In 2002 we, brothers Miguel Ángel y Javier as fourth generation Amigo, were presented with the choice to either continue the family business or to have the viticultural tradition end with us. The decision was easily made. We couldn’t have our predecessors’ efforts be in vain and we realized what a precious legacy they had left us. Decades of experience and century-old bush vines whose grapes deserved to be vinified and marketed under their own label.
We then restored the old family winery to vinify our own wines and created Bodega Luzdivina Amigo. Amigo being our surname and Luzdivina our mother’s first name. With this name we pay tribute to all mothers in the region whose hard work, both on the land and at home, is poorly recognised.
The winery remains a family affair with our parents, Miguel and Luzdivina, still actively involved in the day-to-day work.
OLD VINE LEGACY
Our vineyard area is a complex jigsaw puzzle of many small parcels, called Leiros in Galician-Bercian language. The vineyards are spread between several villages, each with its own orientation and soil type. From sandy and stoney rolling hills to steeper schist slopes.
Whereas our grandfather Vito used to work the land with an impressive ox, nowadays we use mules to plough our vineyards.
We grow the local varieties Mencía and Godello, and have recovered old vine Jerez (Palomino), Doña Blanca and Garnacha Tintorera.
We feel very privileged to work with some incredibly wise vines, varying between 60 and 130 years of age.
THE WINES
We produce white and red wines from different plots, in containers of different capacities, shapes and materials (stainless steel, French barrels of different sizes and Stockinger foudres) and with different aging times.
We take advantage of what the land gives: diversity of the soils, from plots with a gentle slope, with deep alluvial soils formed by granitic sands and clays and vines over fifty years old to make Baloiro, to shallow slate soils rich in minerals on steep slopes, and vines that are more than a hundred years old to make Viñademoya.
VIÑADEMOYA
Our first wine, reflecting our heritage and philosophy. A myriad of very old,
even centenary, Mencía vineyards. Vines planted by our great-grandparents
and tended by next generations. The result is a very high quality entry-level
wine, expressing the depth of the vine age.
